How do I schedule an appointment?

You may contact Dr. Walker via e-mail at dr.jackiewalker@mtsmail.ca  Prior to scheduling an appointment, Dr. Walker will contact you to briefly review the difficulties you are experiencing and to answer questions that you may have. Information will also be reviewed regarding fees, payment, and checking any extended health benefits coverage through a private insurance carrier.

When can appointments be scheduled?

Appointments are available during the daytime, evening, and Saturdays.

What can I expect at the time of the initial visit?

At the initial appointment, the reason(s) for referral are discussed (e.g., symptoms, onset of symptoms, history of symptoms, variability in symptoms).  In order to understand the person’s overall situation, information is also gathered pertaining to health history, family history, work and family situation, other possible stressors, and so forth.  At the end of the initial appointment, there would be a discussion of therapy goals and recommendations regarding coping strategies that can be of assistance in managing the difficulties that are being experienced.

Are private psychological services covered by provincial healthcare?

Private psychological services are not covered by provincial health care, however, if you have extended benefits through a private insurance plan (e.g., Blue Cross, Equitable Life, Great West Life, Manulife) you may have some coverage available to you. Please check with your plan to determine whether private psychological services are covered.

If you do have coverage for private psychological services, it is important to confirm the total amount of coverage per year as well as the percentage of coverage available for each session (e.g. some plans may reimburse you for 80% of session fees).

Do I need a medical referral to see a private psychologist?

A medical referral is not required by the psychologist.  However, it is recommended to check with your private insurance plan to determine if a written recommendation from a medical doctor is required to be reimbursed for services.

Are fees billed to a private insurance plan or paid at the time of therapy?

Fees are paid at the end of every session.  Accepted forms of payment are credit card (Visa or Mastercard), debit, cash, or cheque.  A receipt will be provided that can be submitted to a private insurance company if you have coverage through a private insurance company.

What are the fees for therapy?

Fees for therapy follow the fee guidelines from the Manitoba Psychological Society.  Current fees for therapy are $200/50 minute session. Effective Jan. 01, 2023, private psychologists fees will be increasing to $215.00/50 minute session.

What if I can’t afford the cost of private psychological therapy?

You may have an employee assistance program available through your workplace that provides therapy services. There are also a number of valuable community resources that offer support such as information sessions and therapy groups.  There are also numerous self-help reading materials that can be of assistance.

Community based resources include but are not limited to resources available through the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, the Anxiety Disorders of Manitoba, The Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba, and the Canadian Mental Health Association.

if you have a private insurance plan, it is recommended that you check your plans to obtain information regarding whether you require a physician recommendation in order to be reimbursed for the cost of services.
